Regional Meeting Updates


The National Academy of Arbitrators will have its Annual Meeting in Philadelphia from May 27 through 29, 2010, with an add-on Advocates training on May 26, 2010. The NAA's meeting presents an opportunity to connect with many of our Fellows, some of whom will be speakers on its interesting and informative panel discussions. The theme of the Meeting is “Looking Back and Looking Forward on the 50th Anniversary of the Trilogy.” Registration and program information may be found at the NAA's website atwww.naarb.org

Spotlight on Fellows


Gaston Pearce

red diamond Fellow Mark Gaston Pearce received a recess appointment by President Obama, to the NLRB.  The appointment will remain in effect until the end of the next term of the US Senate, approximately December 2011.  Mr. Pearce was sworn in the NLRB Chair, Wilma Liebman, also a Fellow of the College. Mr. Pearce, formerly of the law firm - Creighton Pearce Johnsen & Giroux of Buffalo, NY - practiced union and employment law and was admitted as a Fellow in 2008. The article, Challenges For The Entertainment Attorney In A “Do It Yourself” World, explores the use of technology, social networking and the practice of law in today's world. red diamondFellow Martin Malin, Director of Chicago-Kent's Institute for Law and the Workplace, has been appointed by President Barack Obama as a member of the Federal Service Impasses Panel (FSIP).  The FSIP is the agency that intervenes when an agency of the federal government and a union representing that agency's employees are unable to reach agreement on the terms of their new collective bargaining agreement under the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute and the Federal Employees Flexible and Compressed Work Schedules Act.  A member of the Chicago-Kent faculty since 1980, Professor Malin teaches courses in labor law, collective bargaining, arbitration, public sector labor law, employment law, contracts and jurispurdence.   For more information click here.

red diamondFellow Jay Roth, National Executive Director of the Directors Guild of America, was awarded the French Legion of Honor for helping to create and promote the Franco American Cultural Fund (FACF), which aims to foster a professional and cultural exchange between French and American filmmakers in his role as National Executive Director of the DGA.  The award was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802.   The official ceremony, which took place on September 17, included the traditional pinning of the red ribbon.  Mr. Roth has served as National Executive Director since 1995 and was elected a Fellow of the College in June 2009.  For more information click here. 

red diamond Fellow Sandra P. Zemm -  Seyfarth  Shaw has announced the establishment of the Sandra P. Zemm Labor Law Prize at Chicago-Kent College of Law.  Ms. Zemm, a former Fellow of the College and partner at Seyfarth, passed away a year ago after a battle with cancer.  She was a recognized leader in the field of labor law and was the first woman partner in Seyfarth's Labor & Employment Department.  She was known for beign a tough negotiator and zealous advocate, as well as a gracious, stylish woman who gave back to her community.  The award was created with her leadership, dedication and community service in mind.  The $1,000 prize will be given annually to the third-year law student who best embodies Ms. Zemm's pioneer spirit and generous attitude.  For more details about her background, the criteria for recognition, and for an opportunity to contribute to the prize fund, please click here.
